Spring table settings that don’t cost the Earth

Spring table settings

It’s great to have the occasion to invite people over, hosting dinner is one of our favourite things to do. The only problem is these things often get quite costly and are not always the most sustainable. For us it’s not about having a huge budget or buying lots of new accessories, it’s about welcoming spring into the home, using things you have around your house and garden to make it look fabulous, and of course sharing great food with friends and family.

Following the dark cosy days and nights of winter, spring is always welcomed here on the farm. We’re on a hilltop so blooms start to flower later than they do for most, so it makes it extra special when spring arrives in our home. Spring is all about the colours for us, following the deep, rich hues of the festive season, it’s an opportunity to fill your table with some light and bright vibes.

Personally, I enjoy the little cracks of sunlight that creep through into our farm kitchen, and finally getting to feel the sun on my face when out walking the dogs. These are fantastic seasonal feelings that I try to capture when setting my spring table, and here’s my top tips on how I do it, without costing the Earth.

Make the most of British Blooms

A great time to gather up British flowers, fresh and pretty without the air miles. Add them to foraged seasonal greens from your garden, or pick some up from your local florist. Use daffodils, tulips, or hellebores to create small posies to adorn your table.

Repurpose your bottles and jars

Pop your blooms into repurposed glass jars and bottles. It’s a great way to make smaller table features using what you already have in your home. Alternatively, why not fill your jars half with water and pop in floating candles, a pretty and inexpensive way to brighten any table. Spread them across your table for little pops of colour, or group together to make a centrepiece.

Lovely Linen

We like to use linen napkins for natural earthy hues, you can even make your own (if you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine)! The beauty of this is that they can be used time and time again, so be sure to choose a colour you really love.

Haberdashery and Herbs

A great little trick to up the spring vibes is to gather some pastel ribbon, we love velvet, linen or cotton, and make a posy of herbs and flowers to tie your napkins or cutlery. Add a vintage parcel tag and these make the perfect named place holders for a more formal setting.

Water that shows off!

We always have a water jug on our table, whatever the occasion. But did you know you can use this to add some spring zing to your table too? Simply fill your jug with long strips of cucumber and slices of your favourite citrus fruits, add a few fresh mint leaves and you’ve got something not only delicious but that makes your table pop too!
